The Internet vs. The World Wide Web
Today it is often easy to interchange the terms ‘internet’ and ‘world wide web’ when speaking about online technology. While it seems for some there is no difference between the two, after researching the topic, I have gained a better understanding of the differences.
While many scientists and researchers worked on the process of creating the internet, the two credited computer scientists are Robert E. Kahn and Vint Cerf. Originally invented in the ’60s for the purpose of military communications, the use shifted to a more social and information platform on August 6th, 1991 when it was opened to the public. The internet today is easily explained at the “host platform” and the ‘world wide web’ is the service provided on top of that for the world to use. So yes, every day you are on the internet, but searching the world wide web. These two platforms work for hand and hand to create and easily accessible experience to anything you could possibly imagine.
The world wide web (WWW) was invented in 1989 by British scientist Tim Berners-Lee. While the original purpose for this platform was also based around the demand for military information sharing, it is now used for anything you can think of, a search engine to gain knowledge on quite possibly anything you can think of. The first website ever created was http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html and gave all the information specifically attributed to what the world wide web was all about. This website too was created by Tim Berners-Lee on August 6th, 1991.
As a young adult living in a digitally controlled world, learning about this topic caught my interest as it is never something I have really thought about much. After learning this I am able to really grasp just how special the digital tools we have today are.
